20th June 2015, workshop on Health Hygiene & Sanitation was organised in Jain Mandir conference hall of Bokakhat where 30 nos. of participants were present. The participants were from two villages of different community i.e., Dhuba ati village (Missing community) and Chandra Singh Ronghpi village (Karbi community).
The programme started with the Welcome Address of Shabana, Project Coordinator where she expressed her sincere gratitude to all the participants for making their valuable time from their daily schedule and participating in this programme. Miss Shabana briefed of the various initiatives taken out by NEST focusing the three different area of operation i.e., Livelihood, Governance and Education. Immediately after this, the session was opened for all the participants to initiate a milieu of Self Introduction.
Ghanashyam Ozah, Project Manager expressed his sincere gratitude to all the participants and uphold the objective of the workshop where he mentioned of the importance of the Helath, Hygiene and sanitation which was followed with a Ice Breaking session.
The next session was followed by Mr. Pankaj Saikia, a Resource Person from PHE where he highlighted the importance of water hygiene and sanitation in terms of health. He started with taking some view points of the participants regarding the topic where he found least knowledge of sanitation. Mr. Saikia presented the importance and the ill effects of it along with spreading different diseases. Stating that Health is wealth mentioned that healthy, hygiene and sanitation all are inter related. Mr. Saikia emphasized that a healthy life and health one should take utmost care of health, ensuring clean environment and using purified water. Mr. Saikia mentioned of the “Swasha Bharat Abhiyan” and Global Hand Washing Day and further demonstrates the steps on Handwash.
The session here paused for Tea Break.
The session was followed by Mr. Babul Hazarika, a Resource Person from PHC where he emphasized on Water and Hygiene and its impact on tourism. Highlighting the importance of the hygiene and cleanliness, Mr. Hazarika emphasized on creating an environment attracting the tourists as lots of tourists come to Kaziranga National Park, by keeping the environment clean and maintaining the key to hygiene. Importance of sanitation was also highlighted as he mentioned it as a condition relating to public health.
In response to the participants Mr. Hazarika mentioned that inspite of the agriculture related work being dependent on agriculture, they need to maintain good health which will increase the potential to work and good health will only come from the proper care of their health i.e., creating a healthy environment.
Ghanashyam briefed of the ongoing project Rural Tourism and mentioned of the rich cultural heritage each community possessed. He further highlighted the tourist’s feedback regarding their community which is highly appreciable but the only thing to look after is cleanliness.
With a Karbi Song by Karbi participants from Chandra Singh Ronghpi village, Miss Shabana started the next session of Cleanliness and Tourism with a task for the participant where the participants were divided into three groups and were asked to point out the things to be kept in mind while receiving the tourists. She further asked them to list out the problems faced in their village regarding sanitation and hygiene and the possible solution to it and presented it.
Mr. Hussain, Chairperson of NEST mentioned hygiene as important for health. He further asked their cooertation and take all the learning with them and to apply in the development of the village. Being a youth it’s their responsibility to make their village a healthy and environment friendly village.
Mr. Ozah started followed the session with the issues of Gender and Sex. He briefed the distinction between the Sex and Gender. Highlighting the socialization process and the norms of the society Mr. Ozah tried to clear all the doubts of the participants regarding the topic with some examples.
With some feedbacks of the workshop from the participants as asked by Mr. Hussain the session ends. Hence the workshop was successful to some extend as the participants gained knowledge through the workshop and had a flash back of the works of the village regarding the works to be strongly focused.
